Abstract

After presenting some key episodes in the historical and intellectual context in which occurred the phenomenon of the witch-hunt, the aim of this paper is to expose a series of philosophical divergent arguments concerning the issue. On the one hand, we analyze the position that Jean Bodin supported in his Démonomanie des sorciers (1580), vast treated in which the author promoted the punishment of witches and wizards by secular authorities. For other one, we analyze the skeptical arguments presented by Michel Montaigne in his Essais (1580); arguments that allow us to point the essayist disbelief regarding the existence of a secret pact between the women and the devil, and his mistrust about the possibility that human beings reach a knowledge of  the supernatural. Through this itinerary, one seeks oppose two antagonistic attitudes front to a phenomenon that cannot be obviated in a wise historical and philosophical reconstruction of the dawn of modernity.
