Abstract

Doris Dörrie is one of the most successful German filmmakers of the last few decades. From her first successful feature film, Männer... (1985), the exploration of sexual roles and of masculinities and femininities have been an ongoing theme in her work, be it films or literature. The purpose of this article is to analyze the short stories in the book Liebe, Schmerz und das ganzeverdammteZeug (1987), focusing on the short story “Männer...” and its eponymous fi lm version. In Männer..., a complex cultural piece belonging to two genres, cinema (1985) and literature (1987), this filmmaker presents a peculiar construction of German masculinities. Roles are re confi gured in order to describe heteronormativity and hegemonic masculinity as themes to be deconstructed and reformulated in terms of equality and gender equity. The mechanisms and rituals of the dominant construction of masculinity are reformulated in order to confront heteronormativity. The heteronormative spaces of masculinity become homoerotic in the resignification (queer) of traditional gender roles that this artist suggests.
