Experiencia americana y reflexión filosófica en la Francia de los siglos XVI y XVIII

Abstract

Based on the analysis of a series of travel narratives and philosophical reflections that circulated in France in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, this paper aims to research on the traces left in the early modern European culture and politics by the experience of travelers in America. It is assumed that from the overseas expansion process initiated by Europe in the late fifteenth century travel narratives not only became a vehicle to represent the other and the self, but also inaugurated a new type of philosophical reflection about otherness. Three cases will be analyzed: that of the link between the travel narratives inspired by the French experience along the Brazilian coast (1555-1560) and On Cannibals (1580) by Michel de Montaigne, the  participation of Joseph-Antoine Pernety in the French expedition to the Malouine Islands (1763-1764) and his subsequent role  in the debate over the nature of America, and Denis Diderot's reflections on the experience of Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in the first French voyage around the world.
