About the Journal

Estudios económicos [es ‘tu ð̞ i̯os e ko ‘no mi kos] is an academic journal dedicated since 1962 to publishing original scientific research with a firm commitment to comply with ethical standards and good editorial practices. To this end, the members of the Editorial Board, authors, and external evaluators adhere to the Code of Ethics and Declaration of Good Practices, which is based on the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.

The Journal is co-edited by the Department of Economics of the Universidad Nacional del Sur and the Instituto de Investigaciones Económicas y Sociales del Sur (IIESS, CONICET-UNS), with a biannual periodicity in printed and digital format. Its ISSN (print version) is 0425-368X, and its ISSN (digital version) is 2525-1295 (Functioning Regulations in Spanish)

The first predecessor is the journal Técnica y Economía (the proper English translation would be: Technique and Economy), belonging to the Instituto Tecnológico del Sur. This institution later served as the basis for the Universidad Nacional del Sur in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. That collection began in August 1949, becoming the first local scientific journal and the means of disseminating research by faculty and visitor professors of that academic institution. In 1956, the Department of Economics and the Institute of Economics Research were created at the same time as the University, and in 1962 both institutions co-edited the first issue of the journal Estudios económicos. For political issues, the publication was interrupted in 1973. However, eight years later, it was decided to resume a new series with the same name. Since 2017, Estud. econ. has been undergoing a transformation process that involved changes in policies and the editorial and technical teams, and the creation of the electronic version in OJS. Today the entire collection, from 1949 onwards, is available in Open Access.

The abbreviated title is Estud. econ. and should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, legends, and bibliographic references.

Approach and scope

Estudios económicos is an academic journal dedicated to publishing original scientific research with a firm commitment to comply with ethical standards and good editorial practices. The decision to publish results of an exhaustive study where evaluation criteria are mainly quality and originality. The papers must meet the presentation guidelines established by the editorial board. All contributions go through a process of external peer review after an instance of pre-evaluation by an associate editor. The triple-blind procedure is followed: Only the Director knows the identity and affiliation of the authors and the two reviewers, but not the Associated Editors.

The objective of the Journal is to publish unreleased scientific works related to Economics and other disciplines with which it shares topics of interest. As a secondary purpose, it intends to offer a critical analysis of books published in Economics, technical notes, and comments.

Peer review process

Submitted papers must not have been published or sent to other journals simultaneously. The journal establishes a review process with two instances. First, some of the Associate Editors conduct a preliminary evaluation related to the importance of the article, its originality, its clarity, and the relevance of the subject of study for the journal (Preliminary Evaluation Form). Manuscripts will only be sent to external reviewers if they meet the formal requirements outlined in the Standards for Originals Submission.

Once the first instance is favorably passed, the article is sent to two external reviewers for conducting the academic evaluation (Evaluation Form). The Triple-blind system is followed throughout the evaluation process: only the director knows the identity and affiliation of the authors and the two reviewers, but not the associate editors.

The recommendation of each reviewer may be: Publish without modifications; Publish with major revision; Publish with minor revision; or Not acceptable for its publication. A manuscript will be published as long as it has two positive opinions. If the manuscript receives conditional approval and the author accepts the suggestions, the reviewer will observe whether his or her suggestions were incorporated and determine whether to recommend publication.

The final decisions regarding the articles to be published, the issue number, and the order of the articles within the issue are the responsibility of the Editorial Board.

Publication Frequency

The publication periodicity of this Journal is biannual. Until 2020 one volume was published in June and another in November of each year. Since 2021 the issues were published in January and July.

Open Access Policy

This Journal adheres to the Open Access model in the belief that state-funded scientific journals should circulate openly, freely, and without restrictions on the Internet. In this sense, authors are not required to pay any fee for the revision of originals or their publication. And the editorial team agrees to disseminate the published works in Open Access indexing services and in various repositories that use Open Archives Initiative-Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).

Therefore, the interested reader does not have to pay any subscription to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link the full texts of the published articles. The only request is to mention the source correctly, for which the complete information is provided in a standard format at the bottom of the first page of each article.

In addition, the reproduction or copying rights are not retained (copyright). This implies that the authors can have the final version of their article and disseminate it by their means in any electronic medium with the mention that the article was published in the journal Estudios económicos. The journal is published under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license. For more information regarding the licenses, visit Creative Commons.

The printed edition is not marketed either. A group of libraries periodically receives the issues as a donation. On the other hand, academic institutions that edit scientific journals receive the collection as an exchange. The copies of the journals received from this reciprocal agreement are donated immediately to the Library <<Dr. Uros Bacic>> of the Department of Economics, Universidad Nacional del Sur. We invite libraries and academic institutions to get in touch to advance this matter.

CRediT Taxonomy

Artificial Intelligence Policy

"AI tools cannot meet the requirements for authorship as they cannot take responsibility for the submitted work. As non-legal entities, they cannot assert the presence or absence of conflicts of interest nor manage copyright and license agreements.

Authors who use AI tools in the writing of a manuscript, production of images or graphical elements of the paper, or in the collection and analysis of data, must be transparent in disclosing in the Materials and Methods (or similar section) of the paper how the AI tool was used and which tool was used. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript, even those parts produced by an AI tool, and are thus liable for any breach of publication ethics" (COPE position statement, 2023)

Plagiarism, Correction and Retraction Policies

By submitting their work, authors agree to abide by the Code of Ethics and the Declaration of Good Practice.

Papers will be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin's plagiarism-checking software, iThenticate. Detection of plagiarism results in automatic rejection.

Errors require the publication of a correction as soon as they are detected. We expect authors to inform the journal's Managing Editor of any factual errors they discover in their article after publication. Minor corrections that do not affect the scientific understanding of the published paper (typographical, formatting errors, etc.) may be rejected. The correction procedure depends on the stage of publication of the article.

The Journal's Director will consider retractions in cases of evidence of unreliable results, data fabrication, plagiarism, duplicate publication, authorship for sale, and other unethical research.

When the Director has decided to retract or correct an article, the retraction statement is made available in the online edition. Retracted articles remain online and available, with the retracted status indicated. The authors of the article concerned will be notified in advance.

Addenda do not contradict the original publication and are not used to correct errors, but if the author needs to update or add important information, this can be published as an addendum in the Notes and Comments section.

An article removal is provided in rare circumstances where the issues cannot be resolved by a retraction or correction.

The Policy of Digital Preservation of Contents

Digital copies of all articles published in Estudios económicos are preserved in the Internet Archive and PKP PN. Additionally, the issues are auto-preserved on several servers, including but not limited to the Central Library of Universidad Nacional del Sur and EdiUNS. Each issue is printed in the same format as its digital version and sent to national and international libraries.
