Abstract

The aim of the present study is to investigate the direction of causality between federal public investments in the transport infrastructure sector and economic growth in Brazil and in the States/Federal District, in the period from 1995 to 2021. The stationarity of the time series was analyzed, considering them whether the presence of structural breaks. Then, autoregressive and distributed lag models (ARDL) were estimated. The econometric results obtained indicated the existence of a Granger bicausality relationship between the analyzed variables. In terms of policy implications, investments in transport infrastructure boost economic growth, this growth generates greater demand for public goods and services in infrastructure, driving more investment in the sector.
