Abstract

This article analyzes the Traveller’s Dilemma from a game-theoretic point of view. The Traveller’s Dilemma, introduced by Basu (1994, 2007) as an example of the failures of theory to explain the behavior of agents, presents the researcher with suggesting opportunities to increase the theoretic toolkit. The mentioned game can be characterized as an extended version of a Prisoner’s Dilemma, in which the strategies for each agent are represented by the choice of an integer from an interval. Interestingly, the stylized facts revealed by experiments carried out under this interaction contrast sharply with the expected results predicted by theory. The aim of this work is to present, from a theoretical point of view, the broadest possible framework that could shed light over agents’ behaviors which could be deemed more compatible with the empirical results.
