Abstract

This study compares two pre-pandemic cohorts with one post-pandemic cohort using student-level microdata from the Aprender assessments and an educational production function with school fixed effects. It seeks to estimate the impact of school closures on mathematics learning and to examine the extent to which connectivity and technological resources are associated with these changes. Additionally, a cross-sectional analysis of the 2021 cohort explores the relationship between pedagogical continuity and the frequency of in-person classes and their effects on learning outcomes. The results indicate a systemic decline of 11 points (0.11 standard deviation) in mathematics performance, underscoring the urgency of addressing a trend that was already concerning prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
